Covidiots - Israel "Has Lost It"

Being the 'Chosen Ones' has proved to be no more protection against the Covid-19 virus in Israel, than it's proving to be in Bible Belt USA. As with America's most religious states, Covid-19 cases are rising exponentially again in Israel.

The top Israeli health official, Siegal Sadetzki, has resigned in protest at the government's handling of the affair following a 'broad and swift' opening of the economy. All the gains from the original strict lockdown appear to have been lost.

Yaakov Litzman, Israeli Health Minister
"I am sure that the messiah will come by Passover and save us..."
Last March, The ultra-orthodox Israeli Health Minister, Yaakov Litzman, revealed his plan for coping with the growing pandemic:

I am sure that the messiah will come by Passover and save us the same way God saved us during the exodus and we were freed. The messiah will come and save us all.

Sadly, the Messiah again failed to show up and both Yaakov Litzman and his wife, Chava, both subsequently tested positive for the virus, having ignored his own social distancing rules, which included a ban on going more than 100 metres from ones home. Having decided that God would protect him, as a member of the United Torah Judaism party, with it's close links to the ultra-orthodox Gur Hasidic dynasty of which he is a Rabbi, he attended a local synagogue to conduct a service.

Such is the fragility of Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition that he can't afford to lose the support of these minor ultra-orthodox parties which, under Israel's proportional representation system are almost guaranteed a seat in parliament and so have an influence way beyond their electoral support as members of a coalition.

In May, 2020, Yaakov Litzman became Housing minister in Netanyahu's government and was replaced by Yuli Edelstein, a Russian Orthodox priest, the son of Jewish converts to Orthodox Christianity.

Last May, Israel opening its schools but many had to close again and thousands of pupils and teachers were ordered to self-isolate, as infections spread. Despite this, bars, restaurants and beaches have been reopened.

Now a second partial lockdown has been ordered. A ban on visitors imposed in March remains in place, while any residents who have travelled abroad must quarantine for two weeks on their return.
