Moral Self-Licensing - Catholic Extremists Steal From the Vatican

Thieves steal Amazon fertility statues as synod nears end

A neat illustration of the hypocrisy inherent in religious fanaticism, where 'faith' and piety are used to excuse moral self-licensed exemptions from the standards they would impose on the rest of us, was on display in Rome a few days ago.

Catholic vandals, attending the Vatican for a synod on preserving the Amazon Rainforest and ministering to the indigenous population there, called by Pope Francis, ignored the 8th Commandment, stole religious fertility symbols known as the Pachamama idols, and threw them in the River Tiber. The statues, symbolic representations of a pregnant women, had been paraded to the Vatican from St. Angelo Castle and presented to Pope Paul as symbols of fertility and life.

The synod had already attracted vociferous opposition from anti-science, climate change deniers and the display of 'heretical' religious artifacts, 'polluting' St Peter', was a step too far. To these Catholic extremists, the indigenous people of the Amazon are to be treated as worthless, their sacred objects and religion as Satanic to be destroyed, and their habitat open to exploitation and destruction.

The vandalism was joyfully announced by American conservative Catholic, Taylor Marshal, via his Twitter account in a tweet which appears to have been deleted, although, as the tweet to the right shows, there is still reaction to it. His tweet read:

I announce to you with great joy: the Pachamama idols that polluted the Church of St Maria Traspontina have been cast away into the Tiber River as an act of obedience to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ & in reparation to His Sacred Heart wounded by sin,

The person who actually stole the statues and threw them in the Tiber has since been identified as fellow Catholic extremist, Alexander Tschugguel, of the Boniface Institute, Vienna, Austria, an organization which campaigns against 'paganism in the church'. Attached to this tweet is a YouTube video of Tschugguel being interviewed by Marshal about his act of theft and vandalism.

On the agenda for the three-week synod of Amazonian bishops was the question of how to find enough priests to minister to remote areas of Amazonia where congregations can go for months without a Mass. Particularly outraging to Marshal, Tschugguel, et al., was a suggestion that married men could be ordained and even that women could be considered for the priesthood.

The final straw for the extremists was when Pope Francis held a prayer meeting in the Vatican garden in front of the Pachamama idols. It was then that they decided "God's enduring word" was unnecessarily restrictive and needed to be ignored in regards to theft. Of course, showing disrespect for and demonising another people and another culture, requires no abandonment of basic Christian principles, since "God's enduring word" contains no prohibition on such actions, even positively encouraging it.

Thankfully, the days when this obnoxious cult reigned supreme in Europe and later, much of the developing world, have long since passed, and the world is moving on to more civilised ways. Tweet
