Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel |
According to Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel, an extreme right-wing Christian libertarian organization, requiring Christians not to gather together in church, where the Covid-19 virus can be more easily spread, is equivalent to the Holocaust!
Liberty Counsel is representing Tampa, Florida-based evangelist Rodney Howard-Browne, who was arrested for defying a local stay-at-home order, and others who have run into that kind of trouble. In a hysterical reaction to the social distancing measures aimed at slowing the spread of the virus so health services can cope with the demand, Staver claimed:
So, it is absolutely — I mean, it’s a targeting. It is, you know, I don’t want to be too melodramatic, but I’m telling you what. You know, this happened before in history. We’ve seen people being targeted, that you are being targeted with a particular symbol that you have to wear. And then so you get targeted with your business, you get terminated from your job, and eventually you get ghettoized. And what we’re seeing here is the absolute targeting of Christians in churches to a level I’ve never even imagined would happen in America.
Comparing American Christians to Jews in Nazi Germany is a favourite tactic of Stavers. He once claimed that for Christians, allowing gay marriage was "like turning Jews over to the Nazis". It's strange, isn't it, that the need by some Christians to feel persecuted leads them to frequently compare themselves to the Jews in Nazi Germany and so to casually trivialise that monstrous wrong (carried out by Christians wearing "Gott Mit Uns" on their belt-buckles).
What Stavers and his over-privileged supporters can't stand is the thought that they should be required to give up a little of their freedom for a while so that others can live. After all, why should a Christian be expected to give up the right to do something in a church that they can perfectly well do at home, even if it means that not so many people witness their piety and shouting down doubts alone is not nearly so effective or comforting as doing it en masse. What does someone else's life matter compared to that?
As though having a President who is stupid enough to suggest injecting disinfectant and drinking bleach to cure Covid-19, Americans have to put up with these over-privileged people demanding the right to gather together where they can share the virus around, then go out into the community to infect others with it.
And all in the name of religious freedom.
