Subversive Talibangelical Christians are continuing their efforts to circumvent the Constitutional Establishment Clause which forbids any tier of US government from promoting any religion.
This time their effort is in Arkansas where the Repuglican-dominated House has approved a bill (by 72-21) to allow the teaching of Intelligent [sic] Design Creationism to children at tax-payers expense. All the Repuglican voted for the bill and all the Democrats voted against it. This is in direct contravention of a 1980 court ruling which forbids the teaching of Creationism in Arkansas schools, several Supreme Court rulings which have struck down previous attempts to do so and the famous Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District which ruled that Intelligent Design is religion in disguise, not science. The bill now moves to the Senate.
Showing an appalling ignorance of both science and theology, Bentley claimed "Scientists have been on both sides of the issue for thousands of years", citing Isaac Newton and Galileo as believing in "God and biblical creation." Neither of those scientists were biologists and neither of them had heard of the Theory of Evolution, of course. And neither of them lived more than 500 years ago, let alone thousands of years ago. But what do facts matter when you're a fanatical zealot, creating a fundamentalist theocracy?
Bentley also cited Act 590 of 1981 which mandated that the state "give balanced treatment to creation science and evolution-science." In fact this was the very law that was struck down by U.S. District Judge William R. Overton, who ruled in 1982 that the law was unconstitutional and that creation shouldn't be part of a science curriculum. SCOTUS had previously struck down Arkansas' ban on the teaching of evolution in 1968. It takes a Talibangelical zealot to cite an illegal Act to justify an another illegal Act.
Rep. Deborah Ferguson, D-West Memphis asked, "Why would we do this when the Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that it is illegal to do that?" to which Bentley revealed how this was merely a ploy, hoping to get SCOTUS to reverse its earlier bans on subversive Talibangelical laws, with, "We have seen the Supreme Court change their mind 200 times." In other words, the Repuglicans are plannign to act illegally again, to see if they can get away with it this time.
I wonder, if the Arkansas Repuglicans are successful in their subversion of the US Constitution, we can expect the creation myths of every religion, no matter how absurd, to be taught to vulnerable children in order to indoctrinate them with religious propaganda disguised as science.
