His Excellency Braulio Rodriguez Plaza Archbishop of Toledo, Spain Source: Wikipedia |
You have to hand it to Archbishop Braulio Rodriguez Plaza, Bishop of Toledo, Spain and thus the senior Catholic cleric in Spain; he knows his theology!
So, when he announced in Toledo Cathedral on 27 December that women victims of domestic violence only have themselves to blame because they disobeyed their husbands, you can be sure he reached that conclusion from a close reading of Christian scripture in the Bible. It was undoubtedly based on the revealed Word of God in that reliable handbook of morals upon which all Catholics, and indeed all people, can depend with absolute confidence.
God's mouthpiece, the unmarried and officially celibate Braulio Rodriguez Plaza, told the congregation that women could avoid being hit by doing what their husbands tell them and can avoid physical abuse by not asking their husbands for a divorce.
The majority of cases of domestic violence happen because the woman’s partner does not accept them, or rejects them for not accepting their demands. Or often the macho reaction comes about because she asked for a separation. [The couples were not in] a true marriage. I don’t think our political leaders are worried about divorce figures when they have fought so hard to implement the so-called quick divorce.
His Excellency Braulio Rodríguez Plaza
Archbishop of Toledo, Primate of Spain
No doubt His Excellency's views coincide with those of the Christian God who, so Christian tradition and dogma says, inspired the following to be written in the Bible:
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Genesis 3:16
Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
Job 14:1-4
If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.
Deuteronomy 22:23-24
If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.
Deuteronomy 22:28-29
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
1 Timothy 2:8-18
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Ephesians 5:22–23
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
Colossians 3:18
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
1 Corinthians 11:7-9
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
1 Corinthians 24:34-35
And of course, as a theological scholar, Archbishop Braulio Rodriguez Plaza would undoubtedly be familiar with the teachings of the founding fathers of Christianity such as Tertullian and Augustine of Hippo
Woman is a temple built over a sewer, the gateway to the devil. Woman, you are the devil’s doorway. You should always go in mourning and in rags. Do you not know that you are Eve? The judgment of God upon this sex lives on in this age; therefore, necessarily the guilt should live on also. You are the gateway of the devil; you are the one who unseals the curse of that tree, and you are the first one to turn your back on the divine law; you are the one who persuaded him whom the devil was not capable of corrupting; you easily destroyed the image of God, Adam. Because of what you deserve, that is, death, even the Son of God had to die.
Turtullian
Any woman who acts in such a way that she cannot give birth to as many children as she is capable of, makes herself guilty of that many murders.
St Augustine of Hippo
Although Martin Luther, traditional founder of the Protestant churches, would not normally be regarded as an inspirational figure for Catholic clerics, there can be little doubt from his words above that our celibate defender of the right of every man to abuse his wife and do with them as he wishes, would not demure in the slightest from Luther's repugnant theology:
Women should remain at home, sit still, keep house and bear and bring up children… If a woman grows weary and at least dies from child bearing, it matters not. Let her die from bearing - she is there to do it. Women have narrow shoulders and wide hips, therefore they ought to be domestic; their very physique is a sign from their Creator that he intended them to limit their activity to the home.
Martin Luther - Founder, Protestant Reformation
Spanish courts have dealt with more than one million cases of domestic violence since 2007 and 148,000 men have been sent to prison for it. In 2015, 56 women were killed in Spain at the hands of their partners. But we can be sure that this brutality, dehumanisation and denial of the basic human right of Spanish women is simply Spanish men carrying out the Christian God's will as explained to them by a Catholic clergy, specially trained, ordained, anointed and empowered by that same God to convey His inerrant, benevolent and merciful message to them.
And of course, 'honest' Pope Francis, who understands better than anyone the need to mistreat women because of that terrible sin by Eve, and in accordance with God's will, has said, and will say, nothing at all to counter this disgustingly misogynistic cleric or lift a finger to protect his victims currently suffering grotesque abuse at the hands of their holy husband.

What an old dinosaur the Bishop is. Spanish society has moved on and will treat the unconnected cleric with the contempt he duly deserves. Here is my take on the 10 Commandments:

Ignore Flaxen and his various rubbish 'takes' on stuff. Read yours truly instead:

When I read things like this, I always wonder why so many women remain Christian when they are in a position to leave the Church.
ReplyDeleteCould it be because the Spanish Mick, the bible(as per the quotes), Tertullian, St Augustine of Hippo and Martin Luther - Founder, Protestant Reformation are believed to be 'spot on' by these myriad women?

As you played with 'Rufa Tunica'(1), I played with 'Fuscus Tunica'(2). As you are, I suspect, a Caucasoid Baby Boomer socialist functionary of the vile Western Patriarchy and I am a cute gamine 30ish Mongoloid Fascist Aristocrat of the North-Myanmar Matriarchy, it is unlikely we'll play nice together in the sandbox.
Query?
Is hyperbolic profanity acceptable 'round these parts? I've a mouth so foul I actually cannot eat with it and being prevented from oozing profane coruscating invective cramps my style.
(1) I suspect you don't mean it as it would be understood in The Land of Smiles, right?
(2) I mean exactly as it would be understood 80 years ago in Europe. I was going to also add 'and Black and Tan' at the weekend', but couldn't find the Latin for it.
