Ark Encounter Suffers Flood Damage

Ark Encounter owners sue over rain damage

Don't laugh!

Ken Ham's Ark Encounter in North Kentucky, which claims to have a replica Ark, is suing its insurers for not paying out for the flood damage caused by heavy rain in 2017 and 2018.

Perhaps, the five different insurers regard this flood damage as an act of God or force majeure. It was caused by an act of gross stupidity. The insurers say they didn't ensure against "correcting design deficiencies or faulty workmanship."

The structure - a building designed to superficially resemble a boat-like object - is made of preformed wood reinforced with steel, and was built by an army of labourers over several years, using heavy lifting gear and modern technology. Ken Ham, the multi-millionaire 'creationist' who came up with the idea for the theme park, claims it's an exact replica of the mythical Ark made of wood that was built by a centenarian man and his three octogenarian sons in a few weeks with their own labour using the tools and technology of the Bronze Age, according to an ancient Middle Eastern origin myth.

In a 77-page lawsuit filed in a U.S. District Court, Ark Encounter is demanding compensation and punitive damages.

The damage caused by the very heavy rain which fell in a short space of time but which Ark Encounter spokespersons insist was not a flood, caused damage to an access road which costs $1 million to repair. Basically the 'lots-of-water-that-wasn't-a-flood' washed part of the road down a hill in a landslip.

As professional geologist and president of the Kentucky Paleontological Society, Dan Phelps, explains, this was a predictable consequence of "building on the shales of the Kope Formation", as any competent geologist would have told Ham. It seems Ham decided to ignore science and rely on prayers to ensure against acts of God.

Okay, you can laugh now.
