In what could rank as one of the most stupidly ignorant and dangerous tweets by a senior Trumpanzee, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, (R- Georgia) implied that COVID-19 is no more contagious than cancer. And, as though to prove it wasn't a mistake, promptly followed it up with a second tweet which made the same idiotic comparison.
She clearly has missed the widely available information about new variants such as δ which gave rise to the massive surge of cases starting in autumn, 2020 and now the ο variant currently causing yet another wave of infections, especially amongst the unvaccinated.
1. Every single year more than 600,000 people in the US die from cancer.
— Marjorie Taylor Greene 🇺🇸 (@mtgreenee) December 4, 2021
The country has never once shut down.
Not a single school has closed.
And every year, over 600,000 people, of all ages and all races will continue to die from cancer.
2. Since #COVID19 tracking has started, 780,000+ people have died in 22 mo in the US, but more than 1 million still died of cancer.
— Marjorie Taylor Greene 🇺🇸 (@mtgreenee) December 4, 2021
More have died in 2021 from covid than 2020 in spite of Gov mandated widespread vaccines, mass public masking, & trillions spent. pic.twitter.com/HYO3PywFLw
And this is a person elected to represent the people of Georgia in the US legislature!
The question though is why does she think the same measures being taken to mitigate the effects of a dangerous virus would work to control cancers? Only a small number of cancers have been shown to be caused by a virus, such as cervical cancer which is caused by the human papillomavirus and which, incidentally, has been massively reduced by vaccinating young girls against it. But even that cancer-causing virus is not transmitted in aerosols and taken into the body via the respiratory system, so why on Earth does this idiot imagine face-masks and social distancing would prevent it, let alone all the cancers caused by other than virus infections.
Marjorie Taylor Greene typified the smugly arrogant anti-science GOP supporters who imaging wisdom comes from scientific illiteracy and ignorance, so learning is a waste of time and probably dangerous. These are the uneducated idiots who are largely responsible for the high and increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the USA compared to the rest of the world.
But Taylor Greene, like the rest of her cynical Regugnican party, is nothing if not a populist who has calculated the bottom line in terms of electoral support and is pandering to the demographic which like to imagine they know better than the experts and, following 70 years or more of GOP-led propaganda in favour of greed and selfishness, now believes the individual has no collective social responsibility and the highest human motives are greed and selfishness.
This is, by and large, the same demographic which follows the evangelical Christian churches and believes the 'American way', in which the individual is elevated above the common good, in a dog-eat-dog culture, is also what God and Jesus created America for. This is the demographic which rejects the idea of being slightly inconvenienced by wearing a face mask in public spaces and getting vaccinated, for the greater good of a lower infection and death rate; the demographic which thinks this is somehow 'socialistic' and even 'communistic' and therefore wrong.
A consequence of this philosophy of greed and selfishness and the rejection of ideas of a greater good, the culmination of 70 years or more of Repugnican anti-liberal propaganda, is that the USA has recorded, and continues to record, the highest number of COVID-19 deaths of any country in the world, including countries such as India and Brazil, where, as emergent economies, health care still lags way behind that of the developed nations. In this respect, decades of right-wing propaganda and GOP popularism in alliance with the evangelical Christian churches, has reduced the USA to the same level as a third world economy and where the victims of the Trumpanzee Repugnicans and their fundamentalist Christian allies are indulging in what can only be described as a self-inflicted genocide as those who listen to the likes of the odious Marjorie Taylor Greene are hugely more likely to be the ones currently dying of COVID-19.
Following the incompetent Donald Trump's panic-stricken response of minimising and dismissing the pandemic because he didn't understand the science and had no idea what to do about the impending disaster, having dismantled the measures President Obama had put in place to deal with just such a pandemic, the GOP and his followers went down the rabbit hole of denialism, resistance to the measures scientists were advocating and castigating those scientists who were warning of the seriousness of the pandemic. They are now stuck down the same rabbit hole, unable to reverse out and admit they got it wrong.
To save face, they are wilfully allowing hundreds of thousands of their fellow Americans to die needlessly of a disease which, while not preventable, can be mitigated by a few sensible measures such as wearing face masks, maintaining social distancing, lock-downs where necessary, and above all by getting vaccinated against it. All of which are now oppose by the populist and irresponsible GOP politicians such as Rep. Margorie Taylor Green (R-Georgia), who deserve to be booted out of office at the earliest opportunity.
And all of this is, of course, providing the virus with a large pool of unvaccinated individuals to infect and produce the next, potentially even more dangerous, variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that Donald Trump dismissed as a Democratic Party hoax and assured Americans would be gone by April 2020 - 788,202 deaths ago to date.
