India is leading the world in the number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections a day, having overtaken Brazil in early August and USA a few days later. Yesterday, a total of 173,932 new cases were recorded, bringing the total to 5,020,359 with 82,066 deaths since the pandemic began.
India is a deeply religious society, like the USA, so it is not surprising that the population is easily duped by frauds who offer magical cures and preventions, especially when linked to religious nationalism.
Indias equivalent to the magic spells cast by America's Kenneth Copeland, is that of BJP MP Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria. According to this report in India Today:
The Rajasthan BJP MP from Tonk-Sawai Madhopur constituency claimed that sitting in mud along with blowing conch shell boosts immunity, which helps the body to fight Covid-19.Meghwal is reported to have tested positive for Covid-19 last week.
Earlier this year, the BJP MP had claimed that applying mud on the body and performing yoga could cure all diseases. Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria had made this claim in June as India celebrated the International Yoga Day.
Before BJP MP Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria’s unusual claim, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had last month announced the launch of ‘Bhabhi ji papad’, which he claimed had ingredients that boosted one’s immunity and would help fight the novel coronavirus.
In a video, Meghwal, a BJP MP from Bikaner said, “Under the Atmanirbhar India campaign, a papad manufacturer has come up with this product that will help in the formation of antibodies to fight the coronavirus. We congratulate this firm for coming up with this initiative under the Atmanirbhar India campaign."
According to this report in TRT World, Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria has also recently tested positive for Covid-19.
Meanwhile, Hindu extremists are reassuring Indians that the coronavirus will be destroyed as soon as the Ram Temple is built at Ayodhya. Ayodhya was the site of an ancient mosque which was destroyed by Hindu militants soon after the Hindu nationalist BJP came to power, claiming that the mosque was built on a sacred Hindu site. The bulding of this temple has become a cause celebre for Hindu nationalists, to demonstrate Hindu supremacy over the Moslem minority population.
According to this report in India Today:
BJP MP Jaskaur Meena, with face-mask acting as chin-warmer. |
BJP MP from Dausa Lok Sabha constituency in Rajasthan Jaskaur Meena has claimed that the solution to the Covid-19 pandemic is the construction of Ram Temple. "Hum tom aadhyatmik shakti ke pujari hain, aadhyatmik shakti ke hisab se chalte hain. Mandir bante hi corona bhag jayega [We are believers and followers of spiritual powers. Coronavirus will be destroyed as soon as Ram Temple is built], BJP MP Jaskaur Meena said. Jaskaur Meena's statement comes days after a similar claim made by her party colleague and BJP MLA in Madhya Pradesh Rameshwar Sharma. Sharma, who is MP protem speaker, had said that coronavirus pandemic will end with the beginning of Ram Temple construction in Ayodhya. The Hindu god, Lord Rama, is evidently killing Indians by the tens of thousands and ruining their developing economy to encourage them to build a temple to him!
