Some Pictures Just Speak For Themselves

I'm sometimes accused of using too many words in my blogs, which might well be true, though I can appreciate how Mozart felt when he was accused of using too many notes, so it's refreshing to be able to make a point with a few pictures:

  1. Years ago I had an opportunity to move from Wisconsin to Alabama. I'm so glad I turned it down.

  2. Ah, yes, the most tragically and chronically backward part of our country, the South. Well, they did lose a very bloody war, but that was 150 years ago now, and the connection is getting tenuous (Germany and Japan lost an even bloodier was 70 years ago and are back to prosperity). If you had maps the things like prevalence of illiteracy and teaching of creationism in schools, the pattern would be similar. Religion is bad for education, and that's bad for everything else.

    1. Thanks. You're right. I've added an adult literacy rates map together with teenage pregnancy and socio-economic mobility maps.

  3. I'm not so sure it is *because* of religion that the south sucks, but rather a history of ignorance and poverty, which self-perpetuates.

    1. But religion is a major co-factor in helping to perpetuate ignorance and poverty. Not every place that is ignorant and poor remains so for generations.

  4. As a strong agnostic who retired from 40 years work in science and mathematics, I feel qualified to point out that there could be factors in addition to religion which should be taken into account.

I am sure you had no intentions of blatant racism, but your maps and comments could be misinterpreted as such by a person of color . . . however, I took no such offense.

    1. Nowhere is there any reference to race, culture, colour or ethnic origin. Any perception of such is wholly in the eye and mind of the beholder.
