Refuting Creationism - How Dogs And Humans Co-Evolved Naturally - No Magic Involved

The story of how wolves became domestic dogs is one to which I have returned several times, for both scientific and personal reasons. It is one of the most remarkable examples of two species forming a relationship that changed the evolutionary future of one and the cultural history of the other.

It also provided the inspiration for two of my novels, The Girl and the Wolf and its sequel, The Way of the Wolf: A Stone Age Epic. These are, of course, works of fiction, not proposed reconstructions of an event for which the details will probably never be known. In them, however, I tried to imagine a biologically plausible way in which the process might have begun: not with people deciding suddenly to “invent” the dog, but with individual wolves and humans discovering that tolerance, cooperation and mutual protection could benefit both.

That basic idea now receives support from a much broader scholarly treatment in a new book by Professor Peter Mitchell, Professor of African Archaeology at the University of Oxford. In First Dogs: Hunter-Gatherers and Their Canine Companions from Prehistory to the Present, Mitchell draws together archaeological, genetic and ethnographic evidence to examine not merely when wolves became dogs, but how relationships between people and dogs developed in different environments and cultures across the world.

Mitchell presents domestication not as a single event at which a wolf abruptly crossed some imaginary boundary and became a dog, nor as a simple process in which humans imposed their will upon passive animals. Instead, it was probably prolonged, gradual and, particularly in its earliest stages, a relationship into which wolves and humans both entered because each gained something from it.

Hunter-gatherers were central to that process, long before humans domesticated crops, sheep, goats, cattle or pigs. Once established, however, the relationship did not remain the same everywhere. As human communities spread into different climates and adopted different ways of life, their dogs changed with them. Thick-coated, powerfully built dogs became essential to transport in the Arctic; smaller, more agile dogs assisted hunters in tropical forests; dogs on the Tibetan Plateau acquired genetic adaptations to low-oxygen conditions; and some Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest even bred dogs whose woolly coats supplied fibre for weaving.

In each case, inherited variation, environmental selection, interbreeding and human preferences produced dogs suited to particular ecological and cultural circumstances. Humans did not receive a collection of ready-made hunting dogs, sled dogs, guard dogs and companion animals. Those forms emerged gradually as human societies and dog populations shaped one another over thousands of years.

Strictly speaking, the publisher’s announcement concerns a scholarly book rather than a newly published research paper. Nevertheless, the history Mitchell describes is grounded in a substantial body of scientific evidence. Indeed, recent ancient-DNA research discussed in an earlier post has established that genetically identifiable dogs were already living with hunter-gatherers in western Eurasia by at least 15,800 years ago, while dogs belonging to related populations were distributed across culturally and genetically distinct human societies by about 14,000 years ago. The relationship itself must therefore have begun earlier still.

From wolf to dog^ the principal evolutionary changes. Domestic dogs did not descend from any modern wolf population. They evolved from one or more Late Pleistocene wolf populations that are now extinct, with later interbreeding between dogs and regional wolf populations further complicating their ancestry. Ancient wolf genomics indicates that dogs received ancestry principally from eastern Eurasian wolves, with additional ancestry related to southwestern Eurasian wolves in some populations.
  • Greater tolerance of humans.Early selection favoured wolves that were less fearful of approaching people and better able to tolerate sustained human proximity. Dogs generally become less wary of unfamiliar objects and situations as they mature, whereas wolves retain stronger neophobic responses. This should not be simplified to “wolves aggressive, dogs gentle”: wolves can be highly cooperative with other wolves, while aggression varies greatly among dogs.
  • A stronger motivation to seek human company.Dogs evolved a willingness to approach, interact with and form attachments to humans extending well beyond the associations that wolves normally form within their own packs. Genetic changes near genes associated with social behaviour appear to contribute to the pronounced sociability of dogs. Research published in Science Advances found structural genetic variants associated with this hypersocial behaviour.
  • Improved communication with humans.Even young puppies with little previous human contact readily follow pointing gestures, attend to human faces and establish eye contact. Comparably reared wolf puppies are less attracted to humans and less successful at interpreting these signals. These differences indicate that selection changed dogs’ inherited social development, rather than the abilities resulting solely from training. Comparative puppy research supports this evolutionary interpretation.
  • Changes in facial expression.Most dogs possess a small muscle around the eye that is absent or much less developed in wolves. It allows dogs to raise the inner eyebrow, producing an expression to which humans appear especially responsive. This probably developed through conscious or unconscious human preference for dogs that communicated effectively with us. Kaminski et a., PNAS.
  • Altered growth and behavioural development.Dogs retain several juvenile characteristics into adulthood, including greater playfulness, behavioural flexibility and dependence upon social partners. Their developmental pathway is not simply that of a permanently juvenile wolf, however: studies show a mosaic of retained juvenile traits and genuinely new characteristics.
  • Changes in skull and body form.Compared with wolves, early dog skulls became proportionally shorter and broader, while body size and shape became increasingly variable. A study of 643 ancient and modern canid skulls found recognisably dog-like forms by about 11,000 years ago and substantial cranial diversity long before modern breed formation. Mesolithic and Neolithic dogs already encompassed about half the cranial diversity found among dogs today. Evin et al., Science.
  • Reduction and reorganisation of the brain.Relative brain size eventually became smaller than in wolves, although this was apparently not one of the earliest consequences of association with humans. Recent evidence indicates that Late Neolithic dogs had already undergone a marked reduction by about 5,000 years ago, whereas much earlier human-associated canids had brains comparable in size to those of wolves. A smaller brain does not necessarily mean a less intelligent animal: dogs became cognitively specialised for living and communicating with humans. Cucchi et al., Royal Society Open Science.
  • Adaptation to human food.Wolves are predominantly hunters of large animals, whereas dogs became more flexible scavengers and omnivores capable of exploiting human refuse. Many dog populations acquired extra copies of the pancreatic amylase gene, AMY2B, improving their ability to digest starch-rich food. This was probably a later adaptation associated with agricultural societies rather than the cause of the original domestication: dingoes and some Arctic dogs retain few AMY2B copies.   • Changes in reproduction.Wolves normally have one strongly seasonal breeding cycle each year. Most domestic dogs can breed outside a restricted season, and females commonly experience more than one oestrous cycle annually. The change is not universal: Basenjis and some other ancient or geographically isolated dog populations retain a pronounced breeding season. Research on reproductive seasonality illustrates the continuing variation among dogs.
  • Far greater variation in outward appearance.Human selection produced diversity in coat colour, hair length and texture, ear carriage, tail shape, limb length and overall body size. Curled tails, drooping ears and piebald coats are often grouped together as a “domestication syndrome”, but scientists increasingly doubt that every feature arose automatically from selection for tameness. Different traits were probably selected independently at different times.
  • Local environmental adaptations.Dog populations acquired adaptations to the environments into which they accompanied humans. Arctic dogs evolved cold tolerance, powerful bodies and metabolic characteristics associated with pulling sledges and eating fat-rich marine foods. Tibetan dogs acquired a high-altitude variant of EPAS1 through interbreeding with Tibetan wolves, allowing them to function more effectively under hypoxic conditions.   • Specialisation for human purposes.Selection for hunting, guarding, hauling, herding, scent detection and companionship produced inherited differences in physique, sensory attention and behaviour. Much of this functional diversity developed long before formal breeds appeared, although closed pedigrees and intensive selection during the past two or three centuries greatly exaggerated it.

The transformation was therefore not a single evolutionary step and there was never a precise generation in which a wolf gave birth to the first dog. Behaviour, anatomy, physiology and reproduction changed at different rates as successive dog populations adapted to living with different human societies. Modern dogs are the varied outcomes of that continuing evolutionary process, not variations upon a dog created in finished form.
The creationist problem is slightly more subtle than simply denying that dogs descended from wolves, because even some leading creationist organisations now concede that much. They evade the obvious evolutionary implications by calling wolves, dogs and assorted other canids members of a divinely created “dog kind”, supposedly descended from a single pair carried aboard Noah’s Ark.

That merely replaces one problem with an even more absurd one. Creationists must compress the divergence, dispersal and ecological adaptation of numerous canid populations into the few centuries following an imaginary global flood about 4,300 years ago—requiring evolution at a fantastically accelerated rate—while simultaneously insisting that evolution cannot produce significant biological change.

Mitchell’s account describes something altogether different: a deep history of variation, selection, adaptation, gene flow and mutual dependence, extending thousands of years beyond the entire creationist chronology. My novels imagine one way in which that partnership might have begun; the archaeological and genetic evidence shows that, however it began, it was a natural, gradual and continuing evolutionary process, with no special creation and no magic transformation required.

We call them ‘man’s best friend’, and the evidence supports it. Dogs have been found buried alongside humans in graves dating back 14,000 years. They appear in ancient art from every continent, and they feature in the mythology, religion and folklore of virtually every culture. Archaeological evidence shows they have helped us hunt, protected our homes, hauled our possessions, herded our livestock and provided companionship through the entirety of recorded history.

Today, there are more dogs living with humans now than at any point in history. We’ve bred them into hundreds of specialised forms, from chihuahuas that fit in a handbag to Great Danes that stand waist high.

But how did so many breeds emerge during these 15,000 years of co-evolution? In his new book, First Dogs: Hunter-Gatherers and their Canine Companions from Prehistory to the Present, archaeologist Professor Peter Mitchell reveals how dog domestication was a complex process in which both people and wolves likely participated – at least initially – as equal partners and how hunter-gatherer communities were absolutely central to this, long before other animals or plants were brought under close human control. The result was the evolution of multiple pathways of interaction as dogs developing specialised traits that closely matched the needs and environments of the human societies with whom they lived.

The connections between dogs on the one paw and people dependent on wild plant and animal resources on the other are ancient, diverse, and profound.

Adaptation and survival across the world

From the Arctic tundra to tropical rainforests, dogs have undergone remarkable transformations that reflect the diversity of human cultures and environments.

This process of parallel evolution has produced animals as different as the compact, thick-coated sled dogs of the far north and the lean, heat-adapted hunting dogs of equatorial regions.

In the high-altitude regions of the Tibetan Plateau, both dogs and their human companions evolved similar genetic adaptations to cope with oxygen-poor air. Research has identified specific genes in Tibetan dogs that help them thrive at elevations where lowland breeds would struggle, mirroring adaptations found in human populations of the same region.

We do not know when dogs first joined them, and the genetic variants needed to thrive there may have been quickly acquired, but until that was achieved hypoxia presumably acted as a constraint on canine presence.

Perhaps nowhere is the human-dog relationship more specialised than in the Arctic, where Indigenous peoples developed sophisticated dog sledding cultures.

Archaeological evidence reveals that Arctic dogs evolved distinctive skeletal features related to their role as draft animals, including specific patterns of vertebral stress and robust limb bones capable of withstanding the demands of pulling heavy loads across frozen landscapes.

These northern dogs weren’t merely tools for transportation, they were integral to survival strategies that allowed humans to thrive in one of Earth’s most challenging environments. The relationship was so close that dogs and humans often shared similar diets, as revealed by stable isotope analysis of ancient bones, with both consuming predominantly marine resources in coastal regions.

In stark contrast, dogs living with hunter-gatherer societies in tropical regions evolved very different characteristics. In the rainforests of South America and Southeast Asia, dogs developed as specialised hunting partners, with enhanced abilities to track game through dense vegetation and navigate complex terrain.

These tropical dogs typically remained smaller and more agile than their northern counterparts, traits that proved advantageous in forest environments. Ethnographic accounts describe how Indigenous peoples carefully managed breeding to maintain these hunting abilities, selecting puppies that showed promise and perhaps sometimes even cross-breeding with wild canids to refresh desired traits.

The diversity of dog forms worldwide reflects not just environmental adaptation but also cultural preferences and specific functional requirements. On the Northwest Coast of North America, for example, some Indigenous groups even bred small, woolly dogs specifically for their hair, which was woven into ceremonial blankets – a unique example of dogs serving a textile rather than hunting or transport function.

In other regions, dogs played crucial roles in spiritual and ceremonial life, leading to selection for particular physical characteristics or behaviours deemed culturally significant.

Disease as a constraint

Research is also starting to highlight how vector-borne diseases may have significantly constrained dog distribution and evolution in certain regions. In sub-Saharan Africa, for example, diseases such as trypanosomiasis and ehrlichiosis created barriers to dog populations, potentially explaining why dogs (a temperate to Arctic northern hemisphere species in origin) arrived relatively late in tropical regions of the world and areas to their south, or remained less common there than in temperate zones.

This disease factor adds another layer to our understanding of how dogs evolved differently across the globe – not just adapting to what was present in their environment, but also being shaped by what was absent or hostile to their survival.

Genetic legacy

Modern genetic studies reveal that many ancient dog lineages have been lost, replaced by European breeds that spread globally during colonial expansion. However, traces of these original populations still persist in some regions, offering glimpses into the deep history of human-dog co-evolution.

The story emerging from archaeological, genetic and ethnographic evidence is one of remarkable flexibility and adaptation. Dogs didn’t simply follow humans around the world – they evolved alongside them, developing specialised traits that made them invaluable partners in diverse ecological and cultural contexts.

This parallel evolution reveals the ways in which humans and dogs have shaped each other’s biology and behaviour over millennia.

The process whereby grey wolves became dogs is ongoing, not one marked by a single threshold event. It was likely both long and drawn out. The relationship thus constructed has been a joint effort, if one where, especially in the West and over recent centuries, humans have increasingly come to dominate in determining its shape and direction. Nevertheless, the way dogs and humans relate – and have related – to each other has value precisely because their mutual, complex entwinement with each other.

Peter Mitchell studied Archaeology and Anthropology at Cambridge and obtained his doctorate from Oxford in 1987. After teaching in Cape Town and Wales, he returned to Oxford in 1995 where he is Professor of African Archaeology and Tutor and Fellow in Archaeology at St Hugh’s College. Along with a longstanding interest in the prehistory of southern African hunter-gatherers (which has involved extensive fieldwork in Lesotho) and Africa’s past more generally, he has written extensively on the archaeologies of dogs, donkeys, and horses. What emerges from Professor Mitchell’s synthesis is not a story of a finished animal appearing suddenly for human use, but of an evolving relationship. Wolves and humans began as competitors sharing the same landscapes and pursuing much of the same prey. Through tolerance, opportunity and mutual advantage, some of those wolves entered a new ecological niche alongside people, and both species began to shape the relationship that followed.

Creationists may concede that dogs descended from wolf-like ancestors, but that concession merely exposes the inconsistency of their position. They must insist that a divinely created “dog kind” produced wolves, coyotes, jackals, dingoes and the extraordinary diversity of domestic dogs within a few centuries of Noah’s imaginary flood. That would require mutation, selection, adaptation, reproductive isolation and diversification proceeding at a rate far faster than evolutionary biologists propose—followed by creationists declaring that none of it counts as evolution.

Nor does the evidence support the claim that animals were created ready-made for human benefit. If an omniscient designer intended dogs to hunt, guard, herd, pull sledges, tolerate high altitudes and provide companionship, why were wolves not created with those characteristics in the first place? Why did thousands of years of natural and human selection have to modify their behaviour, anatomy, metabolism and reproductive biology before they became suited to those roles?

The answer is that there was no advance plan. Different dog populations changed as different environments and human societies imposed different selection pressures upon them. Arctic sled dogs, tropical hunting dogs, Tibetan high-altitude dogs and wool-producing dogs were not separately created models. They were local evolutionary outcomes, assembled from inherited variation, new mutations, gene flow and the selective survival and breeding of animals with useful characteristics.

In The Girl and the Wolf and The Way of the Wolf, I imagined one possible beginning for that remarkable partnership: an act of compassion towards a wolf cub eventually becoming a relationship from which both wolves and humans benefited. We will probably never know whether anything resembling that particular story occurred, but the scientific evidence shows that no magic was needed. Whatever individual encounters began the process, the transformation of wolf populations into dogs was gradual, natural and evolutionary—and it had already been under way for thousands of years before creationists imagine their god creating either wolves or humans.

The real history of the dog is therefore far richer than any creation myth: not the product of a few words spoken during a mythical “Creation Week”, but the outcome of thousands of generations in which two social species learned to live, work and evolve together.
