Creationism Refuted - Fossils On Mountains Are Evidence Of Dynamic Geology, Not A Flood

Finding marine fossils more than a kilometre above sea level might seem, at first sight, to be just the sort of discovery biblical literalists could seize upon as evidence of Noah’s flood. After all, if sediments containing the remains of marine organisms occur high in the mountains, surely the sea must once have covered those mountains—or so the familiar creationist argument runs.


The argument depends upon ignoring one of the most elementary facts of geology: continents are not stationary platforms. Their crust is folded, faulted, stretched, compressed, raised and lowered by tectonic processes operating over millions of years. Marine sediments found at high altitude do not necessarily show that the sea rose to that altitude; they may show that a former seabed was subsequently raised far above the sea.


A striking new example has now been documented by Selma Sarı and an international team of geologists in the Mut Basin on the southern margin of the Central Anatolian Plateau in Türkiye. Their study, published in the journal Geology, describes the world’s highest known late Middle Pleistocene marine deposits: sediments now preserved 1,177 metres above mean sea level but deposited beneath the sea during Marine Isotope Stage 7, approximately 230,000 years ago.


The researchers did not simply find shells on a hillside and invent a convenient explanation for them. They combined several independent lines of evidence, including calcareous nannofossils, foraminifera, ostracod communities, palaeomagnetism, stable-isotope measurements and reconstruction of the original water depth. The ostracods indicate that the sediments accumulated about 50 metres below the contemporary sea surface, while the fossil succession and magnetic record constrain when that deposition occurred.


Taking the original water depth and contemporary sea level into account, the researchers calculated that the deposits have been raised at an average rate of approximately 5.2 metres per thousand years. That is an exceptionally rapid geological uplift rate, probably produced by interacting processes deep beneath Anatolia, including break-off of part of the subducting Cyprus slab and mantle flow associated with the Arabian slab. The marine sediments have therefore become a precisely dated marker carried upwards by the movement of Earth’s crust.

This is exactly what creationist flood mythology cannot provide: a coherent explanation that agrees simultaneously with the fossils, sedimentary environment, magnetic record, isotope evidence, reconstructed water depth, regional tectonics and measured chronology. A single recent inundation would not explain why marine sediments occur at different elevations, belong to different geological periods and have subsequently undergone folding, faulting, uplift and erosion.

Türkiye also contains a particularly notorious illustration of the creationist habit of misrepresenting geology as evidence for biblical mythology. The boat-shaped Durupınar formation in eastern Anatolia—not to be confused with the Mut Basin deposits—was promoted by the late Ron Wyatt as the fossilised remains of Noah’s Ark. Yet geological investigation found no ship, petrified timber or manufactured iron fittings. The supposed walls and metal objects are natural rock layers and concentrations of limonite and magnetite, while the “anchor stones” are locally derived volcanic rocks. Even David Fasold, once one of the site’s principal advocates, eventually co-authored a peer-reviewed geological paper concluding that it was a natural formation.

Personal recollection:
I encountered Jim Pinkoski, one of Ron Wyatt’s principal promoters, on the old CompuServe SciMath and Religion forums. When I asked how they knew that material from the site was fossilised wood, he replied that its high carbon content confirmed it. In the other forum, I suggested submitting the material for radiocarbon dating; Pinkoski then said that this was impossible because it contained no carbon. Unfortunately, I did not retain copies of those exchanges, so this account is from memory rather than a verbatim transcript.
The Durupınar ‘Ark’^ When Geology Is Mistaken for Archaeology. The Durupınar formation is a roughly boat-shaped geological feature near Doğubayazıt in eastern Türkiye, about 29 kilometres south of the summit of Mount Ararat. It lies near Mount Tendürek at an altitude of approximately 2,000 metres and is named after Turkish Army Captain İlhan Durupınar, who identified it in an aerial photograph in 1959.

Its superficial resemblance to the outline of a ship inevitably attracted the attention of people searching for Noah’s Ark. An expedition investigated it in 1960, but digging and blasting revealed only soil and rock. No timber, artefacts or other archaeological remains were found, and the investigators concluded that it was a natural formation.

The site was nevertheless promoted again during the 1980s and 1990s, most notoriously by the self-styled biblical archaeologist Ron Wyatt and his 'assistant', Jim Pinkowski. Wyatt claimed that the formation contained petrified wood, metal fittings, internal bulkheads and other remains of a gigantic vessel. He also identified large perforated stones found elsewhere in the region as “drogue stones” supposedly used to stabilise the Ark.

None of these claims survived proper geological examination.

What the supposed “evidence” actually was

  • The boat-shaped outline — Rock layers can be folded into elongated structures and subsequently exposed by differential erosion. The Durupınar feature has been interpreted as a doubly plunging syncline—a fold in which the rock layers dip towards the centre from several directions—modified by erosion and the surrounding Telçeker earthflow. Other streamlined geological formations occur in the same region.
  • The “petrified wood” — Microscopic examination found no wood cells, organic carbon, bark or other plant structures. Material promoted as fossilised wood included volcanic rock and crinkled metamorphosed peridotite whose natural texture had been mistaken for bark or bundled reeds.
  • The “iron brackets” and “metal walls” — These were natural concentrations of limonite and magnetite derived from the weathering of iron-bearing volcanic minerals. Both minerals can trigger metal detectors, but they are not manufactured iron. Their mineral grains are mixed with clay, quartz, calcite and other natural materials, unlike metal produced by smelting.
  • The apparent internal compartments — Linear mineral concentrations follow bedding planes and fractures produced when the rocks were folded and stressed. Groundwater moving through those fractures concentrated iron oxides along them, creating patterns which enthusiasts interpreted as walls and bulkheads.
  • The “anchor stones” — Geological analysis identified these as locally derived andesite, a volcanic rock common around Mount Ararat. They did not originate in Mesopotamia, where the Ark was supposedly built, and some had evidently been reused as grave markers or ceremonial stones.
  • The Ark’s “biblical dimensions” — The claimed correspondence depends upon selecting a particular definition of the ancient cubit. Moreover, Genesis describes the Ark as a box-like structure with a length six times its width, not as the streamlined, pointed vessel suggested by the Durupınar outline.

A geological contradiction fatal to the Ark claim

Fossiliferous limestone intersects the formation. The geological relationship shows that the limestone was deposited after the folded rocks forming the supposed “Ark”. If creationists identify the marine fossils in that limestone as animals buried during Noah’s flood, their own interpretation requires the alleged Ark to have existed before the flood in which it was supposedly built and launched.

The Durupınar claim is therefore contradicted not only by the absence of any ship material but also by the relative ages of the surrounding rocks.

One of the site’s former advocates, David Fasold, eventually collaborated with geologist Lorence G. Collins in re-examining the evidence. Their peer-reviewed study concluded that the feature was entirely natural and “cannot have been Noah’s Ark nor even a man-made model”. (See: Lorence G. Collins and David F. Durupınar illustrates the danger of beginning with a religious conclusion and searching for features that appear to confirm it. Its outline suggested a ship, so natural folds became hull timbers, mineral deposits became iron fittings and local volcanic stones became anchors. Geologists reversed that procedure: they examined the rocks, minerals, structures and stratigraphic relationships and followed the evidence to its natural conclusion.


Like the marine sediments now standing 1,177 metres above sea level in the Mut Basin, Durupınar is evidence of a geologically active landscape shaped by deposition, tectonic deformation, uplift, mass movement, weathering and erosion—not evidence of a mythical global flood.

The two cases make an instructive contrast. In the Mut Basin, scientists began with the evidence and reconstructed the geological processes that raised an ancient seabed into the mountains. At Durupınar, biblical enthusiasts began with the conclusion that Noah’s Ark must exist and interpreted every fold, mineral concentration and suggestive outline accordingly. One approach reveals the history of a dynamic planet; the other merely demonstrates the power of wishful thinking.

Using an integrated approach combining calcareous nannofossil and foraminiferal biostratigraphy, paleomagnetism, stable isotopes, and paleobathymetric reconstruction based on ostracod assemblages, the authors constrain the timing of marine deposition and calculate an exceptionally rapid surface uplift rate of about 5.2 meters for every thousand years.

These findings offer a rare high-resolution temporal benchmark linking stratigraphic records of marine deposition to deep-seated geodynamic processes, including slab break-off and mantle flow, that drive rapid surface uplift along active convergent margins.

This publication marks the culmination of early-career research by Selma Sarı at Università degli Studi Roma Tre.

Abstract
Reconstructing surface uplift rates in active orogens is critical for understanding how deep Earth processes shape topography, but such estimates require both rapid uplift and preservation of young marine deposits. The southern margin of the Central Anatolian Plateau (CAP) in Türkiye provides an exceptional example, preserving Upper Miocene and late Middle-Pleistocene marine deposits at ∼2.2 km and ∼1.1 km of elevation, respectively, indicating multiphase uplift. We investigated the TOL-1 section in the Mut Basin, which preserves late Middle-Pleistocene (Marine Isotope Stage 7) marine deposits at 1177 m above mean sea level (amsl); the highest in the world. The section records two key calcareous nannofossil bioevents: the last occurrence of Pseudoemiliania lacunosa (0.46 Ma) and the first occurrence of Emiliania huxleyi (0.26 Ma). Foraminiferal biostratigraphy, marked by the consistent presence of Globigerinella calida from the base, indicates that deposition began after ca. 0.53 Ma. Ostracod assemblages reveal a transition from upper epibathyal to littoral environments, with a shallowing-upward trend beginning at ca. 0.40 Ma. Paleomagnetic data indicate normal polarity, consistent with deposition during the current normal polarity Brunhes Chron. By integrating biostratigraphy, paleobathymetric reconstructions (∼50 m below mean sea level), and sea-level estimates at 0.23 Ma (∼−18 m), we calculated a mean uplift rate of ∼5.2 m/k.y. This exceptionally high rate may be attributed to slab break-off of the still-subducting eastern Cyprus slab combined with mantle flow from the Arabian slab window at the Eastern Anatolian collision zone. These findings provide a rare high-resolution temporal benchmark for linking stratigraphic records of marine deposition with deep-seated processes and rapid surface uplift in active convergent margins.

What Sarı and her colleagues have documented in the Mut Basin is not merely the presence of marine fossils at high altitude, but the history of how they came to be there. The fossils identify a marine environment; the ostracods indicate its approximate depth; biostratigraphy and palaeomagnetism constrain its age; and regional tectonics explain its subsequent elevation. Together, these independent lines of evidence show that sediments deposited beneath the sea approximately 230,000 years ago were carried upwards as the southern margin of the Central Anatolian Plateau rose at an average rate of about 5.2 metres per thousand years.

A recent global flood explains none of this. It cannot account for the orderly fossil succession, the palaeomagnetic record, the reconstructed changes in water depth or the relationship between the deposits and the surrounding tectonic structures. Nor can it explain why marine sediments of many different ages occur at different elevations around the world, often folded, faulted, eroded and overlain by younger deposits. Calling all of them “flood deposits” merely replaces a detailed geological history with an unsupported assertion.

The Durupınar “Ark” illustrates the same problem from the opposite direction. Its promoters began with a desired biblical conclusion and reinterpreted every natural feature accordingly: folded rock became a ship’s hull, mineral concentrations became iron fittings, fractures became internal walls and local volcanic stones became anchors. When one proposed test threatened the claim, another excuse could always be found—as I discovered personally when Jim Pinkoski told me in one CompuServe discussion that the alleged fossilised wood had been identified by its carbon content, but maintained in another that it could not be carbon-dated because it contained no carbon.

Science works by exposing explanations to tests which could show them to be wrong. Creationist apologetics works by protecting a predetermined conclusion from precisely those tests. The Mut Basin deposits reveal an ancient seabed raised by measurable tectonic processes; Durupınar reveals only how readily expectation can turn an ordinary geological formation into a religious relic. Neither provides evidence of Noah’s flood, but both provide excellent evidence of the difference between investigating reality and trying to force reality to conform to a myth.
